Uttara was born in Kolkata, India. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata after which she joined the Indian Institute of Science as an integrated-PhD student. She worked under the supervision of Prof. A. R. Chakravarty and her PhD thesis was focused on the design and synthesis of tumor targeting iron complexes which could be used as photocytotoxic agents. After completion of her PhD, she moved to the US where she did her postdoctoral research with Dr. Shanta Dhar at the Miller School of Medicine (University of Miami). She worked on prostate cancer targeted therapeutic nanoparticles and neuroprotectant nanoparticles for brain diseases.

Her current research in Paris is focused on the synthesis of new ruthenium complexes for red light activated photodynamic therapy.

In her free time, she likes to read novels, listen to music or hang out with friends.
