Marta was born in Burgos, a cold but beautiful city in the north of Spain. She studied Chemistry at the University of Burgos, and then, a MSc in Advanced Chemistry in the same university. After these years, she found out she wanted to lead her career towards research, so she decided to start a PhD program with Dr. Gustavo Espino in the synthesis and characterization of Ru(II), Ir(III) and Rh(III) complexes with applications in chemotherapy, LEC devices and photocatalysts. In the years as a PhD student, she did a 3 months placement with Prof. Eric Meggers’ group at Phillips-Universität Marburg, trying to prepare some Ir(III) complexes for bioorthogonal synthesis for cancer research. She finished the PhD in 2017, and then, in 2018, she moved to the University of Sheffield (UK) with a post-doctoral fellowship from Fundación Alfonso Martín Escudero. There, she worked with Prof. Julia Weinstein in the development of new Ir(III) complexes as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy. Moreover, she developed some skills handling and working with cells in collaboration with Dr. Helen Bryant.
After 2 years, she moved to Paris, with a MSCA-IF to work with Dr. Gilles Gasser. Here, she’s working on the synthesis of cyclometalated Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.
She loves dark chocolate and cheese, escape rooms, board games and travel.
